Located in Sydney’s financial district, moments from Martin Place, Merchant Suites reimagines the commercial office as a place of character, culture and connection. Designed with the sensibility of a private residence, the suites offer a rare combination of architectural refinement and social energy.

Our role extended far beyond identity. From naming and narrative through to spatial storytelling, digital presence and on-site experience, we created a cohesive brand world that draws on Sydney’s rich trading history — embedding meaning and memory into every touchpoint.

The Challenge:
Creating Cultural Distinction
in a Saturated Commercial Market

Sydney’s CBD is defined by efficiency and uniformity. Premium office suites often rely on finish rather than feeling — offering quality, but little identity. Yet he area around Martin Place is steeped in cultural history, theatres, lively restaurants and premium shopping, offering an opportunity to develop a presence with rich cultural connection.

The opportunity was to shift perception: to create a commercial environment that felt human, storied and desirable. A place where successful, like-minded businesses would choose to work not just for location, but for atmosphere and association.

Merchant Suites, located in a hidden laneway in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, a rich cultural and commercial hub.

Brand Strategy & Naming:
Reframing the Office as a Place of Exchange

We anchored the brand in the idea of the merchant — not simply as a trader of goods, but as a facilitator of cultural exchange. Drawing on the legacy of early Sydney businessman John Hoskings, and the site’s position between Circular Quay and Martin Place, the name Merchant reflects a moment in time when Sydney was defined by movement, trade and connection to the world.

This narrative reframed the building as more than a workplace. It became a meeting point — of people, ideas and influence.

The Merchant logo draws from traditional stencilled markings used on shipping crates arriving into Sydney’s port — grounding the identity in a sense of history and movement.

The Identity System:
A Layered Expression of Trade,
Craft and Character

The identity draws from the visual language of 19th-century trade — referencing stencilled markings found on shipped goods, softened through crafted detailing to feel contemporary and refined.

A rich visual system unfolds across the building. A six-metre artwork anchors the café-bar, depicting seafaring merchants, while bespoke artworks across each of the six floors form curated collages of traded goods — silks from China, porcelain from England, exotic birds and textiles from across the globe.

Together, these elements create a cohesive and characterful graphic language that carries seamlessly from signage through to marketing collateral.

We created 14 bespoke artworks to extend the narrative throughout the building — each piece contributing to a broader story of global exchange.

Digital installations within Bar Merchant bring selected artworks to life through subtle movement, adding a layer of surprise and immersion.

Spatial & Sensory Experience:
Designing for Connection and Atmosphere

Merchant Suites was conceived as a social environment as much as a commercial one. The café-bar acts as the heart of the building — a place for informal meetings, daily rituals and shared energy. The integration of art, storytelling and hospitality shifts the experience from transactional to relational.

Across the building, the brand is not applied — it is embedded. From wayfinding and uniforms to print and environmental graphics, each element contributes to a cohesive, multi-sensory experience.

BAR MERCHANT —
BRINGING
COMMUNITY TOGETHER

A defining feature of the development is Bar Merchant — a vibrant café-bar located within the lobby.

A strong drawcard for both owners and visitors, it introduces a sense of sociability and energy rarely found in commercial office environments. Consistently receiving five-star reviews, the space has become known for its atmosphere, hospitality and cultural character.

Activated from morning through to evening, it plays a central role in shaping the identity and daily rhythm of the building.

SIGNAGE AND WAYFINDING

The signage system was designed to feel integrated and architectural, rather than applied.

Drawing on the language of trade markings and materiality, each element is carefully considered in scale, placement and finish — ensuring clarity of navigation while reinforcing the brand narrative throughout the space.

Digital Experience:
Translating Story into a Sales Platform

The website was designed as both a marketing tool and a narrative extension of the physical space. Rich storytelling, layered imagery and a clear information hierarchy work together to communicate not just the offering, but the experience of being within it. A simple brand film supports pre-sales, bringing the atmosphere to life for prospective buyers.

The suites are designed to feel residential in tone, balanced with high-functioning commercial amenities including meeting rooms and end-of-trip facilities.

SALES & MARKETING

The marketing approach was designed to create a strong emotional connection from the outset.

From the marketing suite through to printed materials and digital assets, every touchpoint was aligned to convey a sense of quality, story and long-term value — supporting both pre-sales momentum and investor confidence.

Print & Marketing Collateral:
Tactile Expressions of Quality

High-production print materials were developed to reflect the quality of the suites — using carefully selected stocks, finishes and layouts to communicate refinement and permanence.

The marketing suite itself became an immersive brand environment, aligning spatial design, storytelling and sales strategy into a single cohesive experience.

Creative Director, Kirsty Ludbrook, was interviewed about the project on Australia ByDesign on Network Television.

Results & Impact

Merchant Suites quickly established itself as a distinctive offering within the Sydney market:

  • Strong pre-launch sales momentum, with over half the suites secured early
  • A highly engaged community of owners who value both environment and connection
  • A café-bar that has become a destination in its own right, with consistent five-star reviews and a reputation for atmosphere and hospitality

The project also generated broader recognition, including media coverage and a national television feature highlighting the role of branding in shaping the development.
