The Riverhouse is an architecturally distinctive hospitality property in Pererenan, Bali, centred around an extraordinary private residence conceived by renowned Bali-based architect Alexis Dornier. Completed in 2019, the house is defined by bold contemporary architecture, locally sourced sandstone, reclaimed timber, tropical landscape and a strong connection between interior and exterior space.

As The Riverhouse evolves into a broader accommodation experience incorporating the original residence and a collection of private studios, Ludbrook Agency was engaged to develop the brand from the ground up — beginning with a brand workshop and strategy, then extending through positioning, visual identity, signage and wayfinding, guest collateral and the wider hospitality experience.

The challenge was to create a cohesive and recognisable brand that captured the character of the property while retaining its independence, informality and sense of discovery.

THE CHALLENGE

Evolving a private home into a distinctive hospitality brand.

The Riverhouse was never designed as a conventional hotel. Its character came from the opposite: the privacy of a residence, the individuality of its architecture and interiors, and the founders’ own way of experiencing Bali.

As the property expanded, the challenge was to create a recognisable hospitality brand without making it feel corporate, overly polished or disconnected from the original house.

The identity needed to work across both The Riverhouse and Riverhouse Studios, while giving the wider property enough structure to extend confidently into signage, wayfinding, menus, amenities, collateral and digital communications.

BRAND STRATEGY & POSITIONING

A private, design-led way to experience contemporary Bali.

The project began with a brand workshop to establish the positioning, audience and character of The Riverhouse before developing the visual identity.

Our strategic direction positioned the property between the independence of a private villa and the considered experience of premium boutique hospitality.

Rather than relying on familiar tropical resort codes, we focused on qualities already inherent in the property: architecture, privacy, materiality, thoughtful service and a connection to contemporary Bali.

We defined the positioning as:

A private, design-led way to experience contemporary Bali.

The Riverhouse is aimed at experienced, independent travellers who value architecture, culture, food, privacy and a strong sense of place — guests seeking something more individual than a traditional resort experience.

The resulting brand character is relaxed, architectural, contemporary, cultured, warm, independent and quietly confident.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

Architecture with a cultural pulse.

The creative direction grew directly from the architecture and material character of The Riverhouse.

Concrete, dark timber, leather, bronze, tropical planting and changing natural light informed a palette grounded in the physical experience of the property.

Rather than creating a rigid hotel identity, we developed a flexible visual language with more in common with an independent cultural brand: distinctive typography, bold shifts in scale, editorial layouts, expressive imagery and unexpected details.

The result balances architectural restraint with moments of playfulness, allowing the identity to feel considered without becoming formal.

VISUAL IDENTITY

A playfully dynamic brand identity system.

The Riverhouse identity was designed as a visual language rather than a single logo repeated across every application.

A custom wordmark provides the foundation of the system, supported by alternate lock-ups, typographic treatments and a secondary graphic language that allows the identity to move between quieter architectural applications and more expressive guest communications.

Typography combines strong display forms with functional contemporary type, while the colour palette is drawn directly from the property and its environment — timber brown, leather, soft mineral neutrals, volcanic charcoal, tropical green, sea blue and sun-baked terracotta.

Photography adds another layer of personality, moving between architecture, landscape, people and relaxed editorial imagery to create a brand world that feels current, cultured and distinctly its own.

BRAND APPLICATIONS

Building the brand into the guest experience.

From the outset, the brand was developed across real hospitality touchpoints rather than as a standalone graphic system.

Applications include:

Guest welcome collateral
All-day breakfast and drinks menus
Door hangers
In-room information
Beach towels and amenities
Umbrellas and guest accessories
Studio identification
Signage and wayfinding
Digital and social communications

Each element can have its own character while remaining recognisably part of the same Riverhouse world.

Small moments of wit, local language and unexpected detail introduce personality without overwhelming the more restrained architectural character of the property.

SIGNAGE & WAYFINDING

Identity embedded into the architecture.

Our signage and wayfinding design approach treats each element as an extension of the building rather than something applied to it afterwards.

Material concepts include patinated bronze, blackened steel, timber and inlaid lettering integrated directly into concrete surfaces.

By working with materials already present in the architecture, the signage strengthens the relationship between brand and place while remaining understated and tactile. The result sits somewhere between architectural signage, environmental graphics and hospitality branding, reinforcing the character of the property rather than competing with it.

HOSPITALITY & BRAND EXPERIENCE

Considered details without over branding.

The Riverhouse experience is intentionally residential rather than institutional.

Branding therefore appears selectively, through objects and touchpoints that enhance the guest experience rather than turning every surface into a branded moment.

Custom menus, room collateral, beach towels, amenities, local recommendations and in-room details allow the identity to appear naturally throughout a stay.

The aim is simple: for guests to feel that everything has been considered, without ever feeling overly designed.

Testimonial

“Working with the Ludbrook Agency,
we feel like we are being gently taken along for a ride to our destination.

Each step of the branding process is clear, efficient and the results have been very impressive. Kirsty listens to us, synthesises the information and then presents something that we’re sort of thinking …. but much, much better.

I would highly recommend working with them. “
