Richard Ludbrook

Digital Director, Website Developer & Photographer — Co-Founder, Ludbrook Agency.

Richard Ludbrook is a Sydney-based digital director, website developer and professional photographer with more than three decades of experience across visual communication, creative businesses and digital design.

Having designed and developed nearly 400 websites, Richard combines extensive technical experience with a strong visual background and a practical understanding of business. His career has taken him from editorial and advertising photography to founding two of Australia’s most significant professional photography studio businesses, before establishing Ludbrook Agency with his wife and creative partner, Kirsty Ludbrook.

His approach to website design is informed by a longstanding appreciation of photography, architecture, design and visual storytelling, together with firsthand experience of building and managing successful creative enterprises.

Early Years — Photography, Travel & Education

Richard’s interest in photography began at the age of eight, while attending boarding school in New Zealand. With access to a small school darkroom, he was developing and printing his own black-and-white photographs by the age of ten, beginning a lifelong fascination with photography and image-making.

He subsequently studied at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Philosophy and a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Management.

Following university, Richard spent a year living in Japan teaching English, before travelling extensively through China and India – always with a camera in hand.

In 2007 Richard moved to Sydney with the intention of applying to AFTRS (Australian Film, Television and Radio School). At this time he enrolled in courses at the Australian Centre for Photography in Paddington where he met Juli Balla, who was teaching there, and planned to have a career as a professional photographer (Juli remains one of the best photographers working in Australia). Juli heard word that a leading editorial photographer called Geoff Lung was looking for an assistant – Richard applied for the job – entry to the profession has always been via an assisting role. Geoff was very generous with his knowledge and Richard had access to Geoff’s studio and equipment on the weekends to build a portfolio. Within 12 months Richard landed his first editorial job shooting for Vogue Living and within a few more months he was a busy editorial photographer.

Professional Photography — Editorial & Advertising

Richard quickly established himself as a busy professional photographer, working extensively across Australia’s leading interiors, architecture, design and lifestyle publications.

His early commissions included photography for Vogue Living, Vogue Entertaining + Travel and Interior Architecture and Design magazine. He then moved into shooting fashion for Harpers Bazaar and other fashion titles – and then into working with the major advertising agencies on campaigns as diverse as Speedos, Pantene, Levis and the Department of Education.

Being a professional photographer at that time was an extraordinary opportunity to meet other creative people and learn from them. His exposure to the architecture and interior world led to a life long love of mid century modern design.

Pioneer Studios — Building a Creative Industry Institution, 1995–2006

In 1995, an unexpected opportunity led Richard from professional photography into business ownership.

At the time, he shared a large photographic studio in Pioneer House on Broadway in Sydney’s Ultimo. As both photographers were frequently working on location, Richard began renting the space to other photographers. Demand quickly grew, revealing an opportunity to develop a dedicated studio rental business.

He expanded into the adjoining space, initially creating three studios, before progressively taking over additional floors within Pioneer House. As demand continued to grow, Richard leased a neighbouring warehouse in Grafton Street, developing larger drive-in studios alongside professional photographic laboratories and production facilities.

The expanding complex became known as Pioneer Studios.

At its peak, Pioneer Studios operated 12 photographic studios and two laboratories, employing approximately 25 staff. It became a major centre for Australia’s editorial, advertising and fashion photography industries, providing production facilities for photographers, magazines, advertising agencies, art directors and creative teams.

Beyond its physical facilities, Pioneer Studios developed a distinctive creative culture. Its annual themed fancy-dress parties became legendary within Sydney’s photographic and advertising communities, bringing together hundreds of photographers, stylists, designers, art directors and industry professionals.

As the business expanded, Richard increasingly moved away from shooting – he enjoyed the creativity of building a business – and one that Australia had never seen before. He made a special trip to London, Paris and New York to visit all the big famous studios to get ideas for Pioneer Studios.

Sun Studios — A New Vision for Australia’s Photographic Industry, 2006–2014

In 2006, Richard joined forces with Peter Osborne and Gary Lord, owners of professional photographic equipment supplier Baltronics, to establish Sun Studios. The new company combined Pioneer Studios’ photographic production facilities with Baltronics’ equipment sales and rental operations in a 50/50 partnership.

The partners leased a substantial former wool store in Alexandria, Sydney, investing approximately $3 million in its redevelopment. Working with designer Ian Nessick, Richard oversaw the creation of a large professional photography complex incorporating studios, equipment rental, specialist retail, exhibition spaces, a café and facilities for industry events and workshops. Kirsty was involved in the brand identity, graphic design and visual communications.

Sun Studios opened in 2007 and became a major centre for Australia’s professional photographic industry, hosting commercial shoots, exhibitions, workshops, product launches and industry events. The business also developed a close commercial relationship with Canon Australia.

During the years Richard and Kirsty lived in Bali, Richard appointed a General Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of Sun Studios while he continued his involvement in the business. In April 2014, following a period of significant technological and commercial change within the photographic industry, Sun Studios was acquired by Canon Australia.
