CAFE SYDNEY
Custom hospitality website design & e-commerce for iconic Sydney restaurant.
Café Sydney is one of Australia’s most celebrated dining institutions — perched above Circular Quay at Customs House, with sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House that have made it a landmark of Sydney hospitality since 1999. For over two decades, it has set the benchmark for refined, contemporary dining in this city.
When Café Sydney approached Ludbrook Agency to reimagine their digital presence, the brief was clear: build a website worthy of the venue itself. Not simply a restaurant website, but a high-end digital experience that captures the atmosphere, prestige, and warmth that guests feel the moment they step through the doors — and that converts visitors into reservations, event enquiries, and online purchases.
Ludbrook Agency was engaged to design and build the new cafesydney.com from the ground up, including a fully custom e-commerce store — one of the most technically ambitious hospitality websites we have delivered.

The Challenge
Café Sydney occupies a rare position in the Australian hospitality landscape: it is simultaneously an iconic destination restaurant, a private events venue, a cocktail bar, and a retail gifting experience. The existing website did not reflect this breadth, nor did it do justice to the visual drama and brand prestige the venue commands.
The core challenge was threefold. First, the new site needed to translate a deeply sensory, place-specific experience into a digital environment — making a first-time visitor feel the harbour, the occasion, and the quality before they ever make a reservation. Second, it needed to unify multiple commercial functions — dining, events, a gift shop, and a journal — within a single, seamlessly navigated experience. Third, the e-commerce component required genuine custom development: gift cards, celebration cakes, champagne, and curated products needed to be purchasable with the same elegance the physical venue delivers.
For a brand of this stature, an underperforming website is not a neutral outcome — it actively undermines brand authority and costs bookings.

The Strategy
Ludbrook Agency’s approach began with a clear strategic position: this was not a website build, it was a brand experience build. Every design and technical decision was made through the lens of what the venue feels like, not simply what it offers.
We identified that the primary audiences — Sydney diners, corporate event planners, tourists, and gift purchasers — each needed a distinct but coherent pathway through the site. The architecture was designed to serve all of them without friction, with a clear hierarchy that led naturally from discovery to conversion.
Central to the strategy was the treatment of visual storytelling. The site needed to feel editorial — closer to a luxury lifestyle publication than a standard restaurant website — to position Café Sydney alongside the world-class venues it belongs with. This informed every layout decision, content block, and interaction detail.
The e-commerce strategy was built around gifting as a brand extension: the shop not as a secondary feature but as an ambient revenue channel that reinforces the brand’s premium identity. SevenRooms integration was woven seamlessly into the reservation flow so the journey from interest to booking was as frictionless as possible.

CREATIVE DIRECTION & VISUAL IDENTITY
The visual design of the new cafesydney.com draws directly from the physical character of the venue: the warm stone tones of Customs House, the depth of the harbour at dusk, the theatre of a beautifully set table. The palette is restrained and luxurious — deep backgrounds, considered use of white space, and typography that carries weight and elegance without ornament.
Full-bleed video and photography lead the experience, making the first scroll feel immersive rather than transactional. The homepage opens with a cinematic hero video that places the visitor immediately inside the Café Sydney world.
Navigation is intentionally minimal — the venue does the selling, not the interface. Typography choices support the editorial positioning, with a clear hierarchy that guides the eye from atmosphere to detail to action. Every visual element earns its place against a standard: does it match the quality of the experience it is representing?

EXECUTION & ROLLOUT
The site was built on a custom WordPress framework, with WooCommerce powering the e-commerce store. The store was developed to handle multiple product types — gift cards, celebration packages, champagne, and curated retail items with a checkout experience that maintains the visual integrity of the brand throughout.
SevenRooms was integrated directly into the site’s reservation flows, removing any break in the journey between discovering the venue and securing a table. Custom forms were developed for private dining and event enquiries, capturing the information Café Sydney’s events team needs while maintaining a front-end experience consistent with the site’s design language.
A Journal section was built to support ongoing content marketing, with a structure that makes it easy for the Café Sydney team to publish seasonal stories, chef features, and event announcements. A newsletter sign-up was integrated to support CRM and direct marketing.
The final site cafesydney.com was delivered as a fully production-ready, independently manageable platform.
TESTIMONIAL
“From the beginning it has been a pleasure working with you both and I so very much appreciate the opportunity to collaborate and be so involved in the process every step of the way. I truly feel the end result is a fantastic representation of who Cafe Sydney is and who we will be as move as into the next era of Cafe Sydney.”

The Result
The new cafesydney.com delivers a digital presence that is genuinely commensurate with Café Sydney’s standing as one of Australia’s premier hospitality venues. The site performs across all commercial objectives: it presents the brand with the prestige it deserves, it converts across multiple revenue streams, and it gives the internal team a platform they can build and grow with confidence.
The e-commerce store represents one of the most custom and considered WooCommerce builds in the Australian hospitality sector — designed not as a bolt-on but as a natural expression of the brand’s gifting and celebration culture.
