How do we apply the Nine Senses of Branding to a real project?

Mana Sanctuary in Bali is a good example.

When founders Janine Cottle (nee Hall) and Trent Cottle came to us, the project had a working name, Palm Tree Sanctuary, and a women-only model. The foundation was there. What was missing was a single, ownable idea that could be distinctive in a crowded global retreat market.

Our workshop in Bali achieved a strategic pivot that changed everything. Mana, a Māori concept of inner strength built through integrity, respect, and connection to others and nature, gave the brand a single, resonant idea to build from. Ancient in its roots, original in context.

From that foundation, every brand decision followed the Nine Senses of Branding framework.

The Intuitive Senses first.

Connection — the name does this work before a guest arrives. Rooted in the founder’s Māori heritage, it speaks to something universal: the desire to restore your relationship with yourself, others and nature.

Uniqueness — where competitors promise escape, Mana offers active recovery and longevity. A positioning built for a specific audience: high-achievers seeking sustainable energy, not just a holiday.

Harmony — from tactile logo applications and embossed stationery to evocative imagery and considered website architecture. The identity had to feel the same from the physical to the digital.

Integrity — every detail of the retreat experience is true to the principles of Mana. A question printed on the in-room cards: How is your mana today? Small detail, aligned with the brand’s values.

Then the layer of Physical Senses.

Sight — a mineral, foliage and clay palette. Biophilic, grounded, unmistakably Bali. The logo accent above the M signals activation — subtle, purposeful.

Touch — embossed print collateral, foil detailing, uncoated stocks. Staff uniforms in elegant linen. Materials that invite contact and signal craft.

Smell and Sound — we art-directed a two-day shoot in Bali designed to trigger the senses through visual cues. Imagery that evokes Bali scents and temperature, and the stillness of early morning.

Taste — the welcome ritual, food philosophy and daily programmes treat nourishment as part of recovery, not an afterthought.

When the Nine Senses of Branding work in concert, a brand stops being a logo and a website. It becomes an immersive brand world.

Ahead of launch, Mana had already generated strong media industry interest, clear market differentiation, thousands of unique visitors to the website, and a brand platform built for the long term.
